Bigelow Chapel Lawn by Janet Heywood
The myriad changes to Bigelow Chapel, the Lawn, and the Chapel’s landscape are chronicled in this piece alongside spectacular illustrations (by James Smillie) and photographs taken throughout Mount Auburn’s history. Some of the notable historic moments include: the moving of the Ellis and Gould family lots; the addition of the Prince of Wales beech tree; changes to the Ballantine and Allan stained-glass windows; changes in the location of the Sphinx; the role of the Lawn in Decoration Day; and the new Victorian-inspired gardens.
