Cremation at Mount Auburn

In 1897 Mount Auburn began the first crematory in New England to be operated by a cemetery. The first cremation took place on April 18, 1900. In the succeeding years, over 60,000 cremations have been performed. The Crematory, now located adjacent to Bigelow Chapel, has been periodically improved as technology has advanced. It is connected to the historic Chapel that is frequently used for funeral and memorial services.  We now perform over 1,200 cremations annually. Each one is carried out with dignity and care. The remains can be interred here at the Cemetery or elsewhere.

Currently our Crematory is closed while Bigelow Chapel undergoes construction work which includes building a modern state-of-the-art crematory facility.  Read more >> Learn More »
